The Amazing Sim Man

I’m in the midst of elective block and I chose to do my elective in simulation. It’s kinda a choose your own adventure elective, and I’ve been involved in a hodgepodge of activities so far. As a part of the block, I’ve gotten to play around with our sim man and learn about some of the neat things he does. For about $150,000 you get a guy who can do the following

  • Cry
  • Laugh
  • Vomit
  • Cough
  • Talk
  • Sweat
  • Void
  • Pupils that dilate
  • Eyes that blink
  • All the various heart sounds when you listen in the right spots
  • All the various lung sounds when you listen in the right spots
  • Carotid, femoral, pedal pulses
  • You can give him tattos
  • You can give him a foley
  • You can start IVs
  • You can intubate
  • You can vary the difficulty of the intubation. His tongue swells, his jaw becomes stiff
  • You can shock him with real electricity
  • And that’s not all! Ladies, get yours today.

Things he won’t do

  • Ask for dilaudid
  • Ask for a Turkey sandwich
  • Ask for a real doctor
  • As for pregnancy ultrasound just because
  • Miss dialysis cause he was out getting high
  • (so what good is he really at simulating our patients you might be asking, haha)

About ER Jedi

I’m a resident doctor in Emergency Medicine and I’ve learned during the past few years that 1) I’ve had some pretty amazing experiences 2) I have a very bad short-term memory. So this blog is just a place for me to write about some of these experiences, from the ER, medical school, the wards and life in general. At least that way I’ll have some idea as to where I’ve been all this time. A scrap-book of sorts, a place to vent, organize some clinical tools and post a few good songs I’ve heard along the way.

  1. Technology has given him a heartbeat. But can he feel love? Does he dream? Will he ever know the beauty of the sunset or the glimmer of passion in another simulation dummy’s eyes?
