You put a needle where?

So, when you go to order blood cultures in the EMR, you have to pick a site from which the blood culture was obtained from. Pretty much every anatomical site in body is listed, most of which you would never ever obtain a blood culture from.  The next choice in the list after antecubital (which is the correct choice for 95% of blood cultures) is “anus”. On days where I am feeling a little frustrated with the institution of medicine as a whole, I’ll pick the anus as the site of my blood cultures, as a way of making myself laugh and feeling better. I’ve done this a handful of times and the chart has never been flagged.  I mentioned this to one of the nurses who laughed when I told her, but only because she picks “anus” for every single culture she draws.  She’s been doing this for over two years and never heard a peep from anyone about it.

About ER Jedi

I’m a resident doctor in Emergency Medicine and I’ve learned during the past few years that 1) I’ve had some pretty amazing experiences 2) I have a very bad short-term memory. So this blog is just a place for me to write about some of these experiences, from the ER, medical school, the wards and life in general. At least that way I’ll have some idea as to where I’ve been all this time. A scrap-book of sorts, a place to vent, organize some clinical tools and post a few good songs I’ve heard along the way.

  1. People will think you don’t know your arse from your elbow.

  2. Came dangerously close to a spit-take while reading that. Bet it gives the accessioners at the lab a laugh, too!
