No, I’m not a vampire, thanks
Since starting residency and having to be the one to get “hard sticks” I realized I have developed the habit of eyeing up people’s necks to see if they have a good external jugular veins. It’s not just in the ED either, but in the cafeteria, on the street, on TV (the character’s on Grey’s Anatomy would all make excellent candidates). A beautiful woman walks down the street and I struggle as to where to look…. at her neck or at her eyes (cough cough). I worry someone is going to think I’m a vampire one of these days.

Oh well, reminds me of the time when I was out at lunch with this girl who used to work out, and I kinda messed it up when of all things, I appreciated how big the veins of her hands were. Unsurprisingly, she was creeped out beyond measure (being a non medic) and we never broke bread together ever again…
🙂
Happens to us all… I had a colleague who used to rate the veins sticking out on people’s hands/neck out of 10. Unfortunately, when it came to the real world business, he got stuck with the worst lot…
Haha, I heard this happens often with medical training. Hopefully you don’t get too many strange looks.
I’ll admit it… I don’t stare at EJs, but I stare at hand veins. My fiancee has BEAUTIFUL veins. Sometimes when we hold hands I catch myself feeling them with my thumb. (The one time I had to take her to the ER and she got a stick, I have to say I was a tiny bit jealous of the RN).
Then again during my morgue rotation I stared at all the fresh meat and got hungry, so maybe I *am* a vampire…
