WTF #3

94 year old patient in with mild shortness of breath, whose meds included viagra, and his urine tested positive for cocaine and cannabis. The cure to longevity?

About ER Jedi

I’m a resident doctor in Emergency Medicine and I’ve learned during the past few years that 1) I’ve had some pretty amazing experiences 2) I have a very bad short-term memory. So this blog is just a place for me to write about some of these experiences, from the ER, medical school, the wards and life in general. At least that way I’ll have some idea as to where I’ve been all this time. A scrap-book of sorts, a place to vent, organize some clinical tools and post a few good songs I’ve heard along the way.

  1. Why da hell were you running a urine toxicology on a 94 year old who felt “mildly SOB” anyway ? – respiratory depression from illicit meds should be VERY low on the differential, or your neighbourhood REALLY sucks 😉

  2. Thanks actually a good question… There is one attending in our dept that works overnight, and she orders a UDS on everyone with a pulse. Seems kinda wasteful on the surface, but then again, she’s one of the few that sticks to her guns about not handing out narcotics. Seekers know better than to come looking when she’s on.
