Disasters Adverted

I just wanted to take a minute to show some love to the ICU nurses. I’m definitely out of my ER comfort zone up here and when asked questions by the staff I have often silently answered them in my head “I have absolutely no idea”. Apparently, this complete lack of knowledge about what to do for these non emergent mediciney things (urine output anyone?) is expressed on my face, as they more often than not follow up their questions with perfectly reasonable solutions, and for this, I am incredibly grateful.

Nurse: “Hey doc, the lady in bed 3, her urine out put has been down to 15ml for the past three hours, did you want to do something for that? I was thinking maybe we could give her a bolus of 1/2 normal saline since this happened last night as well and 500cc’s took care of it no problem, whaddya think?”.
Me: (I have no idea) “Sounds like a plan!”

About ER Jedi

I’m a resident doctor in Emergency Medicine and I’ve learned during the past few years that 1) I’ve had some pretty amazing experiences 2) I have a very bad short-term memory. So this blog is just a place for me to write about some of these experiences, from the ER, medical school, the wards and life in general. At least that way I’ll have some idea as to where I’ve been all this time. A scrap-book of sorts, a place to vent, organize some clinical tools and post a few good songs I’ve heard along the way.

  1. And remember they do this year after year in July with new residents. Big thanks and buy them some donuts once in a while or even better some healthy food like a fruit basket. Sounds like you are doing well!
